Many students use social media casually and do not think about the consequences that may occur because of it. They might express their opinions about a topic in a not-so-polite manner, and not realize who may end up reading it. Some may even post up inappropriate pictures without second-thinking about who may come across it.

People who may come across these things are future employers or possible life opportunities. With today’s technology, it is not a surprise if a prospecting employer Google searches your name. Would you want your employer to see those pictures of you drinking one too many shots at the bar? Or read about how you “f*cking hate” your current boss?

Reputation management for students is extremely important because of the way technology in today’s society works. Many forget that what goes on the Internet, stays on the Internet — even if you’ve already deleted it off your platform. Your angry tweet could have been retweeted or screenshot by someone else already. Your picture of you doing less-than-impressive things may have already circulated onto a picture blogging site.

This applies outside of the Internet as well. With the technology of smartphones, your unimpressive behaviour can be recorded and uploaded before you even begin to realize what you did wrong. That’s unfortunate, as it is the first 120 minutes that others form a perception based upon the “crisis.” Lucky for you, social media has allowed people to address crisis’s quickly. Although you may be able to tweet an apologetic note within 120 minutes, remember that the original crisis will always be forever on the Internet.

So before you upload that picture of you getting wild at your next college party, think about the reputation you want out there for you as a professional. Rules of the road, don’t post anything that you wouldn’t want your future employers to see.
